Nobody wants to look at a stump for months waiting for it to rot away on its own. One pass with the grinder takes it below the surface in a single visit, clearing the spot the same day - useful when it's about to become lawn, a bed, or part of a new build's yard.
Expect the grinder to reach about five inches below grade on a standard job, deep enough for turf to fill the area back in naturally. If you're planning a replacement tree right where the old one stood, mention it and we'll take the cut lower.
Under the current bylaw, a stump 40 centimetres or wider counts as evidence the original tree was protected, so if that applies, we document the stump's size before grinding it away - useful if the removal was already permitted and you want a clean record.
The lawn stays fine. Grinding is limited to the stump itself and a small ring immediately around it, and the wood chips get cleared away before we head out.
The stump and whatever roots sit near the surface get ground away completely. Roots running deeper than that break down on their own over the next season or two and don't cause trouble left alone.
